What is sublimation?
Dye sublimation applies heat and pressure so that the ink is transferred directly to the fiber of the material at a molecular level, ensuring your designs, numbers, and logo won’t crack, scratch, fade or wear off. With dye sublimation you will get the best long-use option when it comes to keeping your team colors and logos vibrant from game to cleaning and back again!
The artwork is printed on coated heat-resistant transfer paper as a reverse image of the final design much like the application of a temporary tattoo.
The image is printed as a mirror image onto specialized paper, then heat pressed into the fabric so the inks when heated on high heat settings will transition into a gas and fuse with the fibers in the fabric.
This step is very important and some printers don’t take the time, but we have to “cure” the fabric after it’s printed. This ensures the quality of the ink and withstanding fading over time.
What kind of artwork do I have to use for the best printing results for sublimation?
Adobe Illustrator creates vector files that are editable and scalable. We prefer vector artwork and high-res photos at actual size. File formats includes .ai, .svg, .eps, PDF (Illustrator editable). We can’t use Canva, AI generated images or other web based design programs. They only produce jpg and png files that we can’t use for sublimation printing.
What kind of fabrics are the best for sublimation?
The best fabrics for sublimation printing are those made of polyester or a polyester blend. Polyester fabrics have a high affinity for sublimation ink, allowing for vibrant and long-lasting prints. Additionally, polyester fabrics are durable, moisture-wicking, and resistant to shrinking, making them ideal for various applications such as sportswear, activewear, and promotional apparel.
Polyester blends, such as those with spandex or cotton, can also be used for sublimation printing. However, it’s essential to ensure that the fabric has a high polyester content (ideally over 50%) to achieve optimal results in terms of color vibrancy and print longevity.

- Polyester Performance Fabrics: These are engineered specifically for activewear and sportswear, offering excellent moisture management and breathability.

- Polyester Fleece: Ideal for sublimated hoodies and sweatshirts, polyester fleece provides warmth and comfort while retaining vibrant prints.

When selecting fabrics for sublimation printing, it’s essential to choose those with a white or light-colored base, as sublimation inks are translucent and may not show up well on dark fabrics. Additionally, consider the intended use of the garment and the desired characteristics such as stretch, breathability, and durability to ensure the best fabric choice for your specific application.

FABRICS BEST FOR SUBLIMATION
Sublimation requires mostly polyester fabric for the heat print process as described above. Some fabrics have cotton mixed in for a different softer feel. However we typically use a performance based fabric that provides wicking, anti-microbial and in some cases UPF protection.
